Welcome to the Prisons Training Programme

With an increasingly ageing prison population, it is very important to ensure that those nearing their end of life in prison are able to receive the right care at the right time.

The GSF Programme has now been adapted for Prisons. We have worked with one prison healthcare centre, who have achieved the Quality Hallmark Award.

We are now looking for a small number of interested prisons to be part of the next phase of GSF in Prisons, and to help shape how the programme develops.

The benefits and outcomes of the GSF Prison programme will be:

  • Better personalised care through identification and assessment of patients’ needs in final year of life.
  • Proactive, well-coordinated care with improved team work and collaboration with GPs, Hospitals and your local Hospice.  
  • Improved Cross Boundary Care and integration into the wider local health community.

The training includes:

  • 8 Live Webinar Sessions: Each session covers one of the GSF 7 key tasks, sharing good practice and monitoring step-by-step progress.
  • Tools & Resources: Exclusive access to our members area and resources, including teaching materials, posters, videos, leaflets, etc.
  • Measures: Intrinsic evaluations showing benchmarked change and progression over time. The evaluations are at the organisational, resident and staff level and are aligned with national targets to demonstrate change.

There are three different ways to access the programme:

  • Silver programme: Prisons attend 8 live training webinars (2.5 hours per webinar), there is a webinar every 3 weeks over 6 months. 
  • Gold Programme: Prisons attend 8 live training webinars, there is a webinar every 3 weeks over 6 months. On completion of the training programme the staff give themselves 6 months to embed their learning into practice before applying for accreditation.  
  • Bespoke flexible delivery of the programme on site, tailored to your needs and requirements for EOLC training and service improvement for your group of prisons. 

The Accreditation Process

There are four parts to the process:

  • Part 1: Key Outcome Ratios – evidence of attainment of standards in key areas as a run chart over the next 8 weeks & Residents Audit - After Death Analysis x 5 deaths to demonstrate GSF is embedded in practice at the resident level.
  • Part 2: Portfolio of evidence - statement of how you attain the 7 key tasks with supporting evidence and an action plan for sustainability. 
  • Part 3: Assessment Visit - Visit from The GSF Assessment team to assess implementation, team awareness and long-term sustainability.
  • Part 4: Attendance at the GSF conference to celebrate your success and receive your Quality Hallmark Award. 

The programme requires a minimum of 2 nominated leads from the Prison to:

  • Attend the interactive webinar sessions
  • Share examples of good practice with others/peer support
  • Take part in evaluation
  • Lead and be responsible for the implementation of the programme – to cascade the learning from the webinars to other team members
